“Just graduated? Congratulations! What are you up to? Oh, you’ve not found work yet? It’s tough out there! What are you doing in the mean time?”

Most of us are eventually faced with a variation of this conversation; explaining to some distant relative or acquaintance that you don’t have your official post-grad job in law lined up and that you’re trying your hardest to find that graduate entry position.

Not all law units have a percentage of your mark set aside for your participation in tutorials (or seminars, as my university likes to call them), but it’s often a good way to express your thoughts and ideas and actually have a go at applying the concepts you’ve been lectured on. For some people the idea is dreadful (ugh, I actually have to turn up and contribute?), for others, it could be daunting speaking up in front of the class, and for many, it’s a chance to show what you know. Here are some tips to get the maximum class participation marks without coming across as THAT person (you know the type).

I’m back. 

After a two and a half years, I’m calling myself a Law Student once more. 

I’ve returned to the land of ‘but fors’ and double negatives; exceptions within exceptions and the excessive use of convoluted language and compound words such as ‘notwithstanding’, ‘indefeasibility’ and ‘involuntariness’.

Like so many law students, I didn’t get any clerkships, and I was desperate to have a ‘productive’ summer because I'm finishing my degree this semester. My brother had worked for the Commissioner previously in a different organization, so I used this connection to make contact.
