Clerkship Rotations

Our approach to Seasonal Clerkships is very flexible. The duration of our Seasonal Clerkships is normally four weeks and in line with your summer university semester breaks.

You will decide how your clerkship is structured. We would recommend that you spend two weeks in two different practice groups. This will not only ensure that you gain broad experiences in the law and in working with lawyers with different styles, but will also give you the opportunity to work on  matters from beginning to end. You may, however, decide to spend your entire clerkship in one practice group, or alternatively spend a week in each of our practice groups.

Our clerks have the opportunity to rotate through the following practice groups.

Corporate & Commercial (includes Employment &Industrial Relations)

Commercial Litigation

Property Construction & Finance

Revenue Law

Thandi Ellis

When people ask me whether my clerkship experience with Cornwall Stodart was what I was expecting, my answer is always that it exceeded my expectations exponentially.  From the day of my interview then throughout my clerkship my experience was extremely positive.

The firm's values and purposes are strongly identifiable in the everyday life of the firm. The first value that really stood out to me was the strong sense of family. From day one I noticed that creating a supportive and inclusive culture was integral within the firm. For example, whilst having the opportunity to work on some challenging cases such as writing a response on behalf of a company who had been accused of harassment, I never felt out of my depth. This was because managing partners, junior lawyers and legal assistants alike made a point of introducing themselves and making themselves available to answer any questions that I had.

Further, despite the breadth of knowledge gained during law school I was very unsure of what life as a junior lawyer in a commercial law firm actually looked like. At Cornwall Stodart you will have the opportunity to be truly immersed in the life of the firm. I attended a number of CPD sessions, meetings with clients, the annual Christmas party and completed a range of important and engaging tasks. The task that stood out the most for me was the assistance I was able to provide with a Freedom of Information Request (FOI). I conducted research, drafted a letter of advice and was able to email my advice directly to the client. To my sheer delight the client adopted my recommendations despite originally having strong oppositional views.

I cannot recommend Cornwall Stodart highly enough. Having spent just four weeks as a seasonal clerk, I gained a wealth of knowledge that has added context and a strong sense of direction to my study of the law.
