Clerkship Rotations

Clerks usually work in one or two different practice groups, depending on the length of the clerkship.

You’ll be allocated a supervisor in each of your practice groups and you’ll work closely with the partners, senior associates and solicitors in that team. It’s a hands-on role, so you’ll not just be watching from the sidelines. During your time in the team, you’ll be involved in telephone conversations, meetings, client visits and the deals the team is working on. Examples of the different practice groups you could potentially rotate through are;

  • Banking & Finance
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Projects, Construction, Real Estate & Environment
  • Taxation

Every clerk receives feedback. Informal feedback is also provided on the job from partners, senior associates or solicitors talking you through the work you do.

Our people have the opportunity to get involved in the many social and sporting activities that go on in the firm as well as the broader community in which we live.

We’ve designed a program to help you make the most of your time with us. During your clerkship, you’ll learn:

  • The day-to-day skills to get you started – taking instructions, meeting with clients, drafting memos and documents, managing your practice and professional relationships.
  • The core practice teams at King & Wood Mallesons – who they are, what they do, how they’re structured, the clients they work for, and of course, your role within them.
  • Our culture – working within your team, you’ll be exposed to (and encouraged) to get actively involved in the many activities and events that help create our unique culture.
  • Our people – you’ll find that people from every part of the business will help you along, sharing their knowledge, and ensuring you have everything you need to fit in, and do well.

Clerks will get the opportunity to attend client meetings, client functions and firm functions that are scheduled during the clerkship period.

King and Wood Mallesons

Simon Drake, Canberra

My time at King & Wood Mallesons far surpassed my expectations of a summer clerkship. From the moment the clerkship began I was exposed to substantive legal work such as drafting contracts, meeting with clients, researching complex legal questions and preparing drafts of legal advices. Many of these tasks were challenging and involved the kind of practical legal analysis you don’t experience at university. Throughout the clerkship, I felt that I was in a supportive team environment. I was paired with a designated ‘buddy’ and I had ample opportunity to ask advice from my colleagues and supervising partners.

More than anything, I was surprised by the friendly and down to earth culture of King & Wood Mallesons. I thoroughly enjoyed my clerkship, and look forward to continuing on at the firm as a graduate. I would highly recommend the clerkship to any law students considering a career in commercial law.

Danielle Hager, Law Graduate, Brisbane

An experience like no other! I got to know KWM (and what wonderful people they are) and they got to know me, a great way to kick start any law career!

Nicole Wieringa, Law Graduate, Brisbane

A great inside peek into the KWM universe, complete with interesting tasks and entertaining social events.

Claire Achermann, Sydney

Being a part of the King & Wood Mallesons Summer Clerkship Program was an excellent opportunity to see firsthand what commercial lawyers do on a day-to-day basis.  During my two rotations, the teams made an active effort to get me involved in as many matters as they could and gave me substantive and interesting tasks so I actually felt like I was contributing! I had the opportunity to attend client meetings and property settlements as well as put my legal research skills to good use, review legal documents and practice legal drafting. Having a junior lawyer as a buddy meant that I received a lot of one-on-one guidance and support and felt comfortable asking questions about anything. The social aspect of the clerkship was also great. From inter-firm events such as Monday night sport and a trivia night, to clerk lunches and dinner catch ups, there was rarely a night with nothing on. Overall, the KWM clerkship experience is definitely worthwhile and something I would recommend to anyone considering a career in commercial law.

Lauren Ryan, Solicitor, Brisbane

I stressed so much before I got to the firm but once I arrived, I had a great time and actually learnt the practical aspects of law that they never teach you at university.

Cammie Teo, Law Graduate, Melbourne

The clerkship experience at King & Wood Mallesons is one of the best opportunities for law students to experience working in a top-tier firm. Throughout the interview and clerkship process there was plenty of guidance and support from HR and junior lawyers who acted as our buddies, who were extremely helpful in making sure we got the most out of our time during the clerkship. During my clerkship at KWM, my team made sure I was involved in work which was both interesting and challenging. This is an invaluable chance for students to see what commercial lawyers do. Everyone was open to sharing their knowledge and time generously with me to make sure I knew what I was doing on the job.

Besides getting to help out on some amazing work, the clerkship is full of opportunities to meet the lawyers. The people at KWM are the friendliest, most approachable people – besides the numerous coffees, clerkship lunches, and a day trip out of the office, there were many opportunities for friendly chats with people from completely different teams who would smile in the elevators and say hi. This made the clerkship an absolutely enjoyable experience and very worthwhile.

Stephanie Courtice, Law Graduate, Brisbane

I met a lot of great people, learned a lot, and realised there had been no need to be completely terrified!

Lucius Moser, Law Graduate, Perth

What appealed to me about King & Wood Mallesons is that what you see is what you get. Both the interview and the clerkship are a true representation of what it’s like to work at the firm – friendly, relaxed and never boring. People showed a genuine interest in me and made sure that I got the most out of my clerkship, even if it meant them taking some extra time out of their busy days to help me out and explain things to me.

As a top-tier firm, the work that King & Wood Mallesons does is extremely varied and interesting. Even as a clerk, I got involved in some big, exciting matters – things that I’d read about in the paper before work, then actually help out on when I arrived at the office. I was always excited to see what lay in store for me when I got to my desk.

And of course, no clerkship is complete without a social event or two! I was lucky enough to be able to attend both the M&A and firm-wide Christmas parties, which were great opportunities to get to know the partners, staff and my fellow clerks in a casual setting.
