A University of Western Sydney program that educates criminal law students about domestic violence has been recognised with a community sector award.

The Student Connect program aims to give future lawyers an understanding of domestic violence and its impacts, and to better equip them for working with domestic violence victims.

As part of the initiative, lawyers with experience working in domestic violence give guest lectures to criminal law classes, and students visit court to see domestic violence matters.

Fifty percent of women working the law have experienced bullying or intimidation in their current workplace and one in four has experienced sexual harassment at work, according to a new survey.

Last week the Law Council of Australia released the results of its National Attrition and Re-engagement Study which investigated the causes of attrition and ways to retain and re-engage lawyers. Approximately 4,000 members of the legal profession were surveyed, including current lawyers, admitted lawyers who have never practiced, and lawyers who had left the profession.

Australia has been named as one of the world’s best nations for the rule of law, according to new rankings.

Compiled by the World Justice Project, the newly released Rule of Law Index examines how the rule of law is experienced around the world. The 2014 Index surveyed 100,000 households and 2,400 experts in relation to eight key factors: limits on government powers, absence of corruption, order and security, fundamental rights, open government, regulatory enforcement, civil justice, and criminal justice.

For the past three years Lakshmi Logathassan has been collecting laptops from graduating high school students to send to remote schools in Kenya and Sri Lanka. Her work with the Laptop Project and other initiatives to give underprivileged communities access to computers was recognised yesterday when Premier Barry O’Farrell named her the New South Wales Young Woman of the Year.
