The federal government has named the 52nd justice of the High Court of Australia. 

When Justice Kenneth Hayne retires from the Court on 5 June this year, he will be replaced by Justice Michelle Gordon.

As with all appointments to the High Court of Australia, the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s department consulted widely with the legal community before naming Hayne J’s successor. In this case they needn’t have looked so far from home: Justice Gordon and Justice Hayne have been married for nearly 20 years.

Dissenting is out and agreement is in vogue at the High Court of Australia, a study from the University of New South Wales has revealed.

The annual survey of the court’s decision making found an increase in unanimous decisions in 2014, with 43% of cases attracting unanimous judgments, up from 38% the year before.

There’s a new High Court Justice in town. Today Justice Geoffrey Nettle will be sworn in as the 51st judge of the High Court of Australia. 

He replaces Justice Susan Crennan, who retires after nine years with the court.
