If your family tree includes a judge, a Queens Counsel, a barrister, a paralegal or even anyone who has watched a full season of Boston Legal, you can probably stop reading this post now. Sit back and enjoy the benefits of nepotism that pervade the legal profession. We’re really quite jealous.

But if you are descended from a long line of kindergarten teachers or park rangers and don’t actually know anyone with a law degree, you’re probably a little worried about your future career prospects. So what do you do when nepotism isn’t an option?

Do you remember the first-ever tutorial of your law degree? That tutorial where everyone in the class said their name, something “interesting” about themselves and what they hoped to do with their law degree. Do you remember how many people said something altruistic, like working for the United Nations in order to effect positive change in society?

Would you ever put a laxative in a peer’s drink just before an exam? Rip out pages from a library book? While most of you would answer no, the shocking fact is that some students do this to get ahead. Sure, a little competition is to be expected in a law school but when does a little competition become too much?

This week I start law school for the very first time. Those words seem so big and imposing; as if it wasn’t enough to feel like the little kindy student version of myself again, complete with a too-big bag and squeaky new shoes, staring down the barrel of what seems like (another) intimidating portion of my life devoted to study.
