A new foundation will be working to improve the mental wellbeing of Victoria’s legal practitioners. Launched last month, the Wellbeing and the Law Foundation aims to raise awareness, fund research and develop strategies to improve mental health in the legal profession.
The Foundation is a joint initiative of the Law Institute of Victoria and the Victorian Bar, and LIV President Reynah Tang and Victorian Bar Chair Fiona McLeod SC will join the Hon Bernard Teague AO as the Foundation’s directors.
“In our profession we are dealing with people going through great stress and trauma on a daily basis. Coping with this and the demands of practice on top of life's usual challenges can take its toll. It is important for us to join as a legal community to acknowledge and address mental health issues, to support those experiencing distress and de-stigmatise this very important issue”, Fiona McLeod said.
Chief Justice Marilyn Warren of the Supreme Court of Victoria has been named Patron of the Foundation.
