For most law students, holiday work experience means spending your summer indoors. But student volunteers at the University of Newcastle's Legal Centre have been able to escape the office each week as part of the annual Law on the Beach clinic.
Every summer, students and lawyers run a weekly community legal advice service at Newcastle Beach. Since the program started 11 years ago, hundreds of local beachgoers have received advice on a broad range of legal issues such as traffic fines, employment discrimination and more.
Fourth year law and communications student Amy Schmitzer is one of the students participating in the program.
“I thoroughly enjoy connecting with the community and enabling access to the law, and ultimately legal solutions,” she said.
“Our studies so far have been largely theory-based, so it’s great to see how these theories relate to authentic legal problems.”
The clinic runs one day per week for five weeks each summer. The final session of Law on the Beach for this season will take place next Wednesday.
