Australian human rights barrister Julian Burnside AO QC has been named the recipient of the 2014 Sydney Peace Prize.
The award recognises Burnside’s advocacy on human rights issues, particularly asylum seekers. The prize jury praised Burnside’s “unflinching defence of the rule of law as a means to achieve a more peaceful and just society.”
The prize will be officially awarded to Burnside at a ceremony in November.
The Sydney Peace Prize is Australia’s only international prize for peace. Previous recipients include Sir William Deane, Muhammed Yunus, Xanana Gusmão, Hans Blix, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Arundhati Roy, Noam Chomsky, and Patrick Dodson.
