Queensland Names New Chief Justice

Brisbane Supreme Court

Queensland has a new Chief Justice. Chief Magistrate Tim Carmody will soon be promoted to the Supreme Court, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie announced yesterday.

Carmody, who was appointed Chief Magistrate in September last year, will become Queensland’s 18th Chief Justice.

He originally worked as a police officer before pursuing a career in the law. Carmody served as Queensland’s Crime Commissioner until 2002, and then spent five years as a Family Court Judge. He has also been an adjunct professor of law at Queensland University of Technology.

He replaces Chief Justice Paul de Jersey, who will become Queensland’s new Governor next month after almost 30 years with the Supreme Court.
