The High Court of Australia’s Justice Virginia Bell has been awarded an honorary doctorate. Bell J received her Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) at a ceremony at the University of Sydney earlier this month.

The award recognises her contribution to Australian law through leadership in criminal law reform and public policy development, and her advocacy for the economically and socially disadvantaged.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick and indigenous leader Dr Lowitja O'Donoghue also recognised with honorary Doctor of Laws degrees at the ceremony.
