5 Life Lessons from Barry Zuckerkorn

The reign of Netflix has brought a distinct breath of fresh air to my legal studies. I've been blessed with a variety of television shows that have allowed me to see real insights into life as a lawyer – albeit the occasional episode is slightly embellished.

Suits has become "studying for my Corporate Law exam", Boston Legal lays down life as an advocacy lawyer, and with the end of exams drawing to a close, my new obsession has become Arrested Development. The cult following of Arrested Development is nothing new, and I'm ashamed to admit that I'm a little late to the party. But, nonetheless, this show has taught me invaluable legal (and life) skills. Looking for effective business strategies? Ask Barry Zuckerkorn. Having trouble with negotiating? Ask Barry Zuckerkorn. Not sure how to approach conflict resolution? Ask Barry Zuckerkorn.

Barry Zuckerkorn, the Bluth's family lawyer, is the inspiration we all need. He embodies all our hopes, dreams, anxieties and apprehensions of becoming a lawyer. He makes us question whether he’s a real lawyer yet he also shows us that with confidence and conviction you can achieve anything.

So, in an attempt to argue that I've studied today, here's my tribute to the great man:

1. He reveals what the legal billing system is really like.

“It’s like any other day, except that I bill double.”

2. He showed me what real advocacy skills look like.

“It would help if you all showed up looking like a loving, supportive family.”

3. He understands that sometimes, like call centres, you too also have to outsource.

“Wow, you should be the lawyer.”

4. He’s the “reasonable person” we read about.

“We haven’t read it, it was very long, your honor.”

5. Finally, he never fails to provide sound legal advice for his clients.

“Take to the Sea!”
